Risk Assessment Tool (RAT)

QUESTION 3: Would the equipment be considered correct for the job/task?

The equipment (e.g., tools, equipment, hardware, PPE) used to complete the job/task may create risks for employee(s), even when used as intended.  Equipment may have to be used in a manner that is contrary to the manufacturer’s recommendations to get the job/task done.  Consider the following and assess the level of risk associated with each to determine if safe work performance may be affected.

  • Was the equipment designed for the intended job/task?

  • Would employee(s) consider the equipment durable, safe, and reliable?

  • Would the equipment be considered ergonomically correct for the worker?

  • Have employee(s) properly maintained the equipment?

  • Does the equipment have all of its parts and safety features?

  • Can equipment be operated safely?

  • Does the equipment have instructions for safe operational use?

  • Has equipment been subjected to field modifications or damage that affect performance?
